Memorial Services to Be Held Today for Retired Attorney Bob Flandrick

Memorial Services will be held today for J. Robert “Bob” Flandrick, a retired attorney from Burke, Williams & Sorenson with a long history of public law work.

The service is at 11 a.m. at the Rose Hills Mortuary, 9903 East Flower Street in Bellflower.

Flandrick passed away last Friday after 50 years as an attorney. 

At the time of Flandrick’s retirement from Burke, Williams & Sorenson in 2001, he was the city attorney of Camarillo. He previously served as city attorney for the cities of Bellflower, El Monte, South El Monte, Montebello, Hidden Hills, Bell, Baldwin Park and Whittier. He was also special counsel for a number of other cities, including Pasadena, Los Angeles, Bakersfield and Arcadia.

Flandrick also served as the president of the Department of City Attorneys of the League of California Cities and lectured frequently.

He had extensive experience in litigation, with special expertise in eminent domain and land use litigation.

He was the attorney of record in a number of landmark Supreme Court decisions involving local government in California, including Baron v. City of Los Angeles, dealing with city regulation of lobbyists, and Walnut Properties, Inc. v. City of Whittier, concerning the validity of adult business zoning regulations.

After receiving his bachelor and law degrees from the University of Southern California in 1952 and 1955, his initial attorney experience was as a member of the Office of the Judge Advocate General of the United States Air Force, where he held the rank of first lieutenant from 1957-58.

In 1958, Flandrick became a principal of Stevens and Flandrick and the city attorney of South El Monte which he helped to incorporate in that same year.

Six years later, he and Charles Martin formed the San Marino law firm of Martin and Flandrick.

Flandrick joined the firm of Burke, Williams & Sorensen, Flandrick is survived by his wife Mary and his children John Flandrick and Marian Bray.
