Review Requested of Ruling Readmitting A. Thomas Hunt to State Bar

By a MetNews Staff Writer

The State Bar has requested review of a July 25 decision to reinstate former civil rights lawyer A. Thomas Hunt.

State Bar lawyer Alan Gordon confirmed that a request was filed with the Review Department Aug. 2. Gordon said he is waiting for transcripts and that review briefs will be filed soon.

Hunt resigned from the State Bar with charges pending in 1993 after former clients complained that he had abandoned their cases.

He petitioned for readmission last year, and presented his case in March before State Bar Court Judge Paul Bacigalupo.

Hunt testified that he became an alcoholic and failed to properly handle his clients’ cases in part as a reaction to social and political changes that were eating away at his success as a groundbreaking civil rights attorney.

State Bar lawyers said Hunt had failed to show remorse and rehabilitation.

Bacigalupo ruled in July that Hunt had established by clear and convincing evidence that he has been sufficiently rehabilitated.
