By NAZANIN AGANGE, Staff Writer
Los Angeles attorney Don T. Hibner Jr. has been named the State Bar Antitrust & Unfair Competition Law Section’s Antitrust Lawyer of the Year.
Hibner, of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP, joins a long list of prominent antitrust lawyers to receive the award since its creation in 1993, including local attorneys Julian O. Von Kalinowski, Maxwell Blecher and former San Francisco mayor, the late Joseph Alioto.
He will be honored at the Section’s 12th Annual Lawyer of the Year Dinner on Oct. 24 in Santa Monica.
Hibner, who became a partner in Sheppard Mullin in 1968, said he acknowledges the mentors who have helped him succeed.
“In accepting this award, I am mindful of those who made it possible for me to practice in the exciting and ever-changing field of antitrust law,” Hibner said. “These include Gordon Hampton, who `drafted’ me into antitrust law as a specialty, and to literally dozens of antitrust lawyers, antitrust agency enforcement officials, judges and economists from whom I was able to learn.”
Hibner has litigated over 300 antitrust cases and has written and lectured on a variety of antitrust issues during his 40 years of experience. His 1967 article “Attempts to Monopolize: A Concept in Search of Analysis” is among his most influential writings; it was credited with the eventual overruling of the 1964 Lessig v. Tidewater Oil antitrust decision by the 1993 United States Supreme Court.
Sheppard Mullin Public Relations Manager Rex Fontenot said Hibner has been the Chair of the American Bar Association’s Antitrust Section, and its Franchising and Distribution Law committee among holding numerous other leadership positions.
He is an advisor to the State Bar Antitrust Law Section’s Executive Committee and a past Chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Section on Antitrust Law and Trade Regulation.
Hibner earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from Stanford University.
