San Gabriel Valley Attorney Arraigned on Extortion Charges

By a MetNews Staff Writer

A San Gabriel Valley attorney was arraigned yesterday on felony charges that he and a co-defendant tried to extort $25,000 from a San Gabriel man.

The attorney, Chunping Shen, 43, of El Monte, and co-defendant, Lian Wang, 45, of San Gabriel, were charged with two counts of extortion stemming from accusations that the pair attempted to extort money from a San Gabriel man in March.

The complaint alleged Shen and Wang tried to extort money from the man after Wang visited the man’s home on March 3 and supposedly became ill.

Investigators say Shen contacted the victim a few days later, saying he was the woman’s lawyer.

The money was to be paid to prevent the woman from making certain allegations about the time she spent at the victim’s home.

A secretary at Shen’s law office said he was busy and would be unavailable for comment.

Shen and Wang charged July 30 and surrendered Aug. 6.

They are scheduled to return to Alhambra Superior Court Sept. 26 to arrange a preliminary haring.

Both defendants are free on their own recognizance.
