Commission Moves Up Confirmation Hearing for Rubin to Oct. 22

The confirmation hearing for Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Laurence D. Rubin, one of three jurists nominated for the new Div. Eight of this district’s Court of Appeal, has been moved up to Oct. 22.
The commission announced the schedule change in a press release late Friday. No explanation for the change was given, and the Administrative Office of the Courts, which handles scheduling details and other support services for the commission, was closed yesterday due to the Columbus Day holiday
Rubin’s hearing was originally scheduled for Nov. 21, along with those of Justice Candace Cooper, now an associate justice in Div. Two and nominated to be presiding justice of Div. Eight, and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Paul Boland, nominated as an associate justice in the new division.
The hearings for Cooper and Boland remain scheduled for the later date.
Two hearings previously scheduled by the commission for Oct. 22 remain on tap for that date. The commission is to consider the nominations, submitted by the governor last month, of attorney Richard M. Mosk to succeed the late Justice Ramona Godoy Perez in Div. Five and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Dennis M. Perluss to replace retired Justice Richard C. Neal in Div. Seven.
The Mosk hearing will begin at 10 a.m., with hearings for Boland and Rubin to follow sequentially.
When hearing Second District nominations, the commission consists of Chief Justice Ronald M. George, Attorney General Bill Lockyer; and the district’s senior presiding justice, Joan Dempsey Klein of Div. Three.
The deadline for submitting written comment on the nominees, or to request an opportunity to speak at the hearing, is 5 p.m. next Monday. Requests to speak must include a summary of the facts on which any testimony or opinion will be based.
