Eleven Los Angeles lawyers are on a list of the nation’s top black attorneys published in next month’s Black Enterprise magazine.

The cover story in the magazine’s November issue features top attorneys in 15 categories ranging from criminal defense to patent law. The magazine says it spent months researching the list and consulted law schools, legal scholars, and bar associations.

Only practicing attorneys are included.

The Los Angeles lawyers who made the list are: Stephen D. Barnes of Barnes Morris Klein Mark & Yorn; Leroy Bobbit and Virgil Roberts of Bobbitt & Roberts; Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. of The Cochran Firm; Peter L. Haviland and Channing Johnson of Akin, Gump, Strauss Hauer & Feld; Constance Rice of English, Munger & Rice; Nina L. Shaw of Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka & Finkelstein; John B. Sherell of Latham & Watkins; Bart Williams of Munger, Tolles & Olson; and Naomi Young of Baker & Hostetler.

Three other California attorneys are also included on the magazine’s list. They are: Eva Paterson of the Equal Justice Society in San Francisco; Patrick S. Thompson of Pillsbury Winthrop in San Francisco; and Issac J. Vaughn of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Palo Alto.

Altus W. Hudson of Kidd & Hudson, who is president of the John M. Langston Bar Association, said he had heard of only a few of the lawyers listed. He noted it was made up mostly of lawyers from big firms.

Deputy County Counsel Nedra Jenkins, who is president of the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, commented that while others could have been included, those who made the list were “definitely” deserving of recognition.
