Judge Issues Sweeping Secrecy Order in Lawsuit Against Amazon

U.S. District Court Judge William B. Shubb of the Eastern District of California has granted a request by Amazon.com and by a minor who sued it, through a guardian ad litem, for an order sealing documents relating to the compromise of the claim to the extent of rendering non-public not only the child’s medical records but also the date or birth, amount to be paid, and how much the attorneys will get.
The order, made Monday, comes in the case of C.T. v. Amazon.com Services, LLC., 2:24-CV-03667.
Acting as guardian ad litem is Adam Tedder of El Dorado County. father of the youngster, who was born in 2021. Amazon was sued in a products liability action based on selling a “water bead toy set” that was allegedly dangerous. The child was injured after swallowing a water bead that, according to the complaint, filed Dec. 20, 2024, “contained toxic amounts of acrylamide in violation of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.”
A stipulation recited that the parties wished to keep the terms of the settlement “in strict confidence.”
The sealing order applies to the notice of application and application for approval of minor’s compromise and the proposed order approving application.
