Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maurice A. Leiter’s last day on the bench will be April 24, ending a judicial career of more than a decade.
After using earned vacation days, the judge will officially retire on May 30.
He was appointed by then-Gov. Jerry Brown on Nov. 17, 2015. At that time, he was with the law firm of Arnold and Porter LLP.
Leiter joined that firm in 1991 and became a partner in it in 1994. Before that, he was assistant chief of the Criminal Division at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District, and earlier an associate in the firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison.
His law degree is from Georgetown University.
He said Saturday:
“Shortly before my first day as a judge, the presiding judge told me that this would be the best job I’ve ever had. She was right.”
The presiding judge then was Carolyn Kuhl.
Leiter continued:
“It’s been a joy and an honor to help resolve cases that have a huge impact on the litigants’ lives, to uphold the law, to learn from dedicated colleagues, to work with skilled attorneys.”
Looking to the future, he said:
“I’m looking forward to having more time to spoil my grandchildren, travel, read, and pursue other activities, including singing with Angel City Chorale. I’ll also look at other opportunities to contribute.”
