Commission to Consider Appointments to C.A.

By a MetNews Staff Writer

The Commission on Judicial Appointments will hold virtual public hearings at the Ronald Reagan State Building tomorrow to consider the nominations of three jurists to posts on this district’s Court of Appeal.

Helen Zukin is currently an associate justice on Div. Four. If approved by the three-member panel, she will become the division’s presiding justice, replacing Brian Currey who retired and is now an arbitrator/mediator/appellate consultant.

Zukin, whose law degree is from Loyola, was a Los Angeles Superior Court judge from 2018 until her appointment to the Court of Appeal in 2023.

Also coming before the commission at its 1 p.m. session are Los Angeles Superior Court Judges Armen Tamzarian who, if confirmed, will replace Zukin as an associate justice, and Mark Hanasono, who would replace Justice Luis Lavin on Div. Three. Lavin retired from the court and is now a mediator/arbitrator.

Tamzarian earned his law degree at Southwestern. He has been on the Superior Court since 2013.

Hanasono joined that court the same year. His law degree was conferred by Georgetown.

Comprising the commission are Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and Arthur Gilbert, the district’s senior presiding justice.
