Los Angeles Superior Court judge

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Nancy L. Newman has delayed slightly her departure from the bench, moving the date from March 10 to March 30 in order to finish up some matters.

Her official retirement date remains April 21.

She will be “keeping busy with a number of activities,” in retirement, she said, “including more time riding my horse, cycling, and traveling, beginning with an upcoming bike trip along the Danube.”

Newman was appointed to her post by then-Gov. Gray Davis on March 21, 2003. She was, at the time, a partner in the law firm of Knapp, Petersen, and Clarke, which she had joined in 1985, and where she handled the defense in insurance and product liability cases.

Before that, she was with the law firm of Ivie, McNeill, and Wyatt, tending to probate, family, and juvenile cases.

“It has been the honor of my life to serve as a judge for Los Angeles County,” she told the METNEWS. “As I reflect on the last 20 years, I feel fortunate to have experienced a number of different assignments including Criminal, an Independent Calendar Court and now Juvenile Justice.

“Each assignment has been enjoyable, and I treasure the friendships with my colleagues at each courthouse.”

The judge added:

“I am grateful to be finishing my career with a Juvenile Justice assignment where there is a true feeling of an ability to make an impact on someone’s life. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with our youth, many who have had unimaginable challenges in their early years.

“My greatest joy on the bench has been seeing positive changes in many of their lives. Whether it is graduating from high school, becoming drug free and crime free, or getting a job, these are significant accomplishments that we celebrate.”
