Balloting Under Way for Court Commissioner

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Electronic balloting among judges of the Los Angeles Superior Court began yesterday to select a new court commissioner.

There are three contenders. The judges generally select the person who is at the top of the list prepared by the Commissioner Selection Committee, and that candidate is Karine Mkrtchyan, a partner at the Glendale law firm of Fraser Watson & Croutch, LLP.

Ranked second by the committee is Chief Deputy Los Angeles County Counsel Lawrence L. Hafetz. Third on the list is Los Angeles County Bar Association Immediate Past President Ann Park, who is of counsel at Foley & Mansfield PLLP.

Judges have the option of requesting paper ballots. Balloting ends at 4 p.m. on Sept. 19 and the votes will be counted starting at noon on the following day.

The vacancy was created by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s appointment of then-Commissioner Evan Kitahara to a Los Angeles Superior Court judgeship, announced July 28.
