Mori, Cody Nominated as C.A. Justices, Bloom Appointed to L.A. Superior Court

Gov. Gavin Newsom yesterday nominated Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Audra Mori and Ventura Superior Court Judge Tari Cody to serve as a justices of this district’s Court of Appeal, and named Richard Bloom as a judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court.

If confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Appointments, Mori, 55, will serve in Div. Four and Cody, 63, will be a member of Div. Six, the Ventura-based division.

Mori was appointed to the Superior Court in 2018 by then-Gov. Jerry Brown. At the time, she was a partner in  the Los Angeles Office of Perkins Coie LLP, where she was managing partner from 2017-18. She was previously a partner at Piper Rudnick LLP and at Preston, Gates and Ellis LLP.

She earned her law degree at Cornell University.

Mori would fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Thomas Willhite.

Cody was named to her present post in 2000 by Newsom. She was then an associate at Lemieux & O’Neill.

Her law degree is from Loyola. She fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Steven Z. Perren.

The commission consists of Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero, Attorney General Rob Bonta and the district’s senior presiding justice, Arthur Gilbert.

Bloom served as a member of the state Assembly, representing West Los Angeles, from 2013-22. He was executive director for community initiatives at People Assisting the Homeless from 2008-10 and was executive Director of the Levitt Quinn Family Law Center from 2005-07, and was a member of the Santa Monica City Council from 1999-2012, including serving as mayor.

His law degree is from Loyola. He succeeds Judge Sherilyn P. Garnett who is now a judge of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Newsom also nominated First District Court of Appeal Justice Tracie L. Brown as presiding justice of Div. Four and San Diego Superior Court Judge Julia Kelety as a member of Div. One of the Fourth District Court of Appeal, as well as appointing nine persons to superior courts in other counties.
