Gov. Gavin Newsom has nominated Court of Appeal Justice Brian Currey this district’s Div. Four to move up to the post of presiding justice of his division and, if he is confirmed, as expected, has designated Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Helen Zukin to fill the consequent associate justice vacancy.

The governor on Friday also chose Orange Superior Court Judge Martha Gooding to serve on Div. Three of the Fourth District Court of Appeal and appointed 27 judges of superior courts, including seven in Los Angeles County.

Currey has served on Div. Four since 2018. The previous presiding justice, Nora Manella, at a retirement party Walt Disney Concert Hall on Feb. 22., expressed the hope that Currey would succeed her. He served as a Los Angeles Superior Court judge from 2014-18. Currey was an associate at O’Melveny and Myers LLP from 1981-89, a partner there from 1989-2010, and was of counsel to the firm from 2013 until his appointment to the bench.

From 2010-13, he was counsel to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and was deputy mayor for economic and business policy in in 2013. His law degree is from the University of Virginia.

Zuskin has been a judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court since 2018. She was a partner at Kiesel Law LLP from 2010-18 and was of counsel to that firm from 2006-10, has been a sole practitioner, a partner at Simke, Chodos, Silberfeld and Anteau Inc., and an associate at Greene, O’Reilly, Agnew and Broillet.

She received her law degree from Loyola.

Currey and Zuskin will face confirmation hearings before the Commission on Judicial Appointments comprised of Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and the district’s senior presiding justice, Arthur Gilbert of Div. Six.

The panel acting on the nomination of Gooding, a graduate of the Appointments University of California, Berkeley School of Law and a former partner at Jones Day, will be Guerrero, Bonta, and the Fourth District’s senior presiding justice, Manuel Ramirez of Div. Two.

Appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court were Jerrold Abeles, a partner in  ArentFox Schiff LLP and long-time chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Judicial Elections Evaluation Committee; Deputy District Attorney Sonia Govea; Deputy Public Defender Diana Tsang; Supervising Deputy Federal Public Defender David Wasserman; Ryan White, a partner at Halpern May Ybarra Gelberg LLP; Deputy District Attorney Ryan Williams; and Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Lynette Gridiron Winston. Abeles, Williams, and Winston received their law degrees from USC; Tsang, Wasserman and White attained theirs from UCLA; and Govea graduated from the law school at Columbia.

All of the Superior Court appointees are Democrats except Williams, who is a Libertarian.
