By a MetNews Staff Writer

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Frederick N. Wapner’s last day on the bench is today.

He will use up earned vacation time and will officially retire on July 14.

Wapner, 72, is the son of the late Joseph A. Wapner, who was presiding judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court in 1969 and 1970 and went on to become the judge on television’s immensely popular show, “People’s Court” from 1981-93.

Frederick Wapner was appointed to the Municipal Court in 1989 by then-Gov. George Deukmejian and was elected to the Superior Court, without opposition, on March 26, 1996.

He received his law degree from the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law in 1975. Wapner served as a deputy district attorney from 1975-89.

Southwestern Law School bestowed its Robert Takasugi Judicial Excellence Award on him in 2018.
