The Commission on Judicial Appointments yesterday confirmed Maria E. Stratton as presiding justice of Div. Eight of this district’s Court of Appeal

Stratton fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Presiding Justice Tricia Bigelow. She had served as an associate justice of the division since 2018 and was a Los Angeles Superior Court judge for 12 years before that.

From 1981-84 and, again, from 1993 to 2006, Stratton was as federal public defender for the Central District of California. In between those stints, she was with the law firm of Talcott, Lightfoot, Vandevelde, Woehrle and Sadowsky, working her way up to the role of managing partner.

Her law degree is from the University of California at Berkeley.

The commission was comprised of Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and the district’s senior presiding justice, Arthur Gilbert of Div. Six.

Also confirmed yesterday was Martin N. Buchanan as a justice of the Fourth District Court of Appeal’s Division One. A sole practitioner since 2010, he fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Patricia D. Benke.

The panel confirming Buchanan was comprised of Cantil-Sakauye, Bonta, and the Fourth District’s senior presiding justice, Manuel A. Ramirez of Div. Two.
