Retired Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Alan S. Rosenfield died yesterday at the age of 70.

Rosenfield was appointed to the Newhall Municipal Court on Jan. 23, 1990 by then-Gov. George Deukmejian (now deceased) and became a judge of the Superior Court by virtue of unification in 2000. He presided over criminal matters in the Newhall, Lancaster, and Antelope Valley courthouses during his tenure, which ended with his retirement in 2017.

He received his law degree from Southwestern. Rosenfield was a deputy district attorney from 1984-90 and a deputy sheriff from 1976-84, serving as a bailiff from 1980-84.

Presiding Judge Eric Taylor commented in an email to the court’s bench officers:

“Alan’s passing is a reminder that life is our most precious and fragile gift. Take the time to appreciate family and loved ones, and to forgive and heal broken relationships. And let’s all stop for a moment to appreciate and treasure our profession as Alan did, even after retirement.”
