Schwartz, Vazquez to Retire From Superior Court

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Two Los Angeles Superior Court judges—Teri Schwartz and Carlos E. Vazquez—will be leaving the court in September.

Schwartz’s last day of performing judicial duties will be be Sept. 2. She will then use up earned vacation days and officially retire Sept. 15.

Vazquez’s last day on the bench will be Sept. 16. The official severance date is Oct. 2.

It was through election that Schwartz gained her judgeship. In the June 1994 primary, the then-deputy district attorney defeated then-Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Thomas Parrott Jr.

The Los Angeles Times endorsed her, remarking that “Schwartz has won the respect of lawyers and judges for her skill, intelligence and demeanor.”

The METNEWS had endorsed Parrott but withdrew that endorsement after he made a public statement deriding Schwartz based on her sexual orientation.

Her 1980 law degree is from the University of La Verne.

Vazquez is also a former Los Angeles deputy district attorney. He was appointed to his post by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2010.

He received his law degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1988.

Neither judge responded to an inquiry as to reflections on bench service or post-judgeship plans.
