Bradley S. Pauley, a partner in the appellate law firm of Horvitz & Levy, on Friday issued the following statement in his role as president of the Los Angeles County Bar Association:

The Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA) applauds the nomination of Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as the 116th Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. If confirmed, Judge Jackson will be the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court, as well as the first former public defender. Judge Jackson currently sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C Circuit, to which she was appointed in 2021.

This first-ever nomination of an African American woman to serve on our nation’s highest Court is an occasion for all Americans to celebrate. It is a concrete example of progress as America moves toward fulfilling its promise of full equality and inclusion for all citizens.

According to the White House’s website, in nominating Judge Jackson, the President “sought a candidate with exceptional credentials, unimpeachable character, and unwavering dedication to the rule of law. And the President sought an individual who is committed to equal justice under the law and who understands the profound impact that the Supreme Court’s decisions have on the lives of the American people.”

LACBA is confident that, if confirmed by the Senate, Judge Jackson will be an outstanding Supreme Court Justice.
