NOBUMOTO

The memory of Karen Nobumoto, the 2001 State Bar president, will be honored at a ceremony on Aug. 20 in Baldwin Hills.

Nobumoto died May 10 in Las Vegas, where her mother resides and where she was receiving treatment for an illness she had endured over a period of several years. She was 70.

Prior to her illness, Nobumoto had been a deputy Los Angeles district attorney since 1989.

V. Ahda Carlisle Sands, a past president of the John M. Langston Bar Association (as was Nobumoto), is an organizer of the memorial ceremony. She said Friday that there will be limited seating due to the venue’s Covid restrictions.

The location will be disclosed when reservations are made, Sands noted. She said reservations—which are due by Aug. 15— can be obtained by emailing celebratekaren1@gmail.com or telephoning or texting 714-588-0401.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Allen J. Webster Jr., a past Langston president, will serve as emcee. Speakers will include, in addition to Sands, other past Langston presidents: Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Glenda Veasey, also a past president of the Black Women Lawyers; former Los Angeles County Bar Association President Roland L. Coleman Jr.; and Deputy District Attorney Melinda J. Murray, a member of the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission and a former president of it.

Others speaking will be Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney Michele B. Anderson, Metropolitan News-Enterprise Co-Publisher/General Counsel Jo-Ann W. Grace, retired Administrative Law Judge Clara L. Slifkin, former State Bar President Thomas G. Stolpman, and former California Attorneys for Criminal Justice President Mia F. Yamamoto.

The program will begin with a song selection by Lisa Nobumoto, Karen Nobumoto’s sister, followed by the speakers, audience parting remarks, another song selection by Lisa Nobumoto, and networking/fellowship.
