Whether Campaign to Put Gascón Recall on Ballot Has Enough Signatures Is in Doubt

By a MetNews Staff Writer

The campaign to qualify a recall of District Attorney George Gascón on the Nov. 8 ballot announced yesterday that it has collected “over” 566,857 signatures—the bare number needed—which it will submit to the Office of Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters today.

However, it did not indicate whether it had met its goal of producing the 650,000 to 700,000 signatures which it estimated were actually needed, in light of the certainty that some signatures will be rejected.

While withholding a statement as to how many signatures it did gather, presaging a possible shortfall, it released an upbeat statement, reading:

“The people of Los Angeles have spoken in a resounding way, with hundreds of thousands of residents adding their names to the recall petition and 37 cities voting no confidence in their District Attorney. On Wednesday, we will be submitting the required signatures to initiate a recall. The sheer magnitude of this effort, and time and investment required to get to this point, show how strong the public desire is to remove George Gascon from office. From day one, this recall has been led by the very victims who Gascon has abandoned, ignored, and dismissed. When the recall qualifies, he will not be able to ignore them any longer.”

Gascón has come under heavy criticism for policies aimed at lower sentences. In February, a plebiscite showed that 97.9 percent of members of the Association of Deputy District Attorneys who voted—which was 83.3 percent of the more than 800 members—favored a recall of the district attorney.
