By a MetNews Staff Writer

State trial and appellate courts are closed today in recognition of Native American Day.

Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye commented yesterday:

“The Judicial Council was proud to sponsor this landmark legislation authored by Assemblymember James Ramos last year. By honoring California Native American Day, we properly recognize the contributions and history of our state’s First People. The important day marks another step in our mission in the judiciary to provide equal access and fairness throughout our justice system—one in which all Californians feel welcome and are represented.”

The holiday is to celebrated on the fourth Friday each September. There’s no new paid holiday for court employees; they lost Columbus Day/Indigenous Americans Day, Oct. 10, as a day off.

State offices are open today, as are federal courts and offices. State offices will also be open on Oct. 10, but federal courts and offices will be closed.
