LASC Judge Byrdsong Elected CJA President

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Rupert A. Byrdsong has been elected the 90th president of the California Judges Association by the group’s Executive Board, it was learned yesterday.

The action was taken Monday afternoon. Byrdsong will serve a one-year term beginning Oct. 1, succeeding Orange Superior Court Judge Thomas Delaney in leading the organization, which has more than 2,300 members.

Byrdsong was appointed to the bench on June 18, 2014 by then-Gov. Jerry Brown. He was then a partner in the law firm of Ivie McNeill & Wyatt, practicing employment discrimination law.

In 2006, Byrdsong served as president of the John M. Langston Bar Association, of which he is a life-time member.

He is a founding member of the Association of African American California Judicial Officers and served on the Executive Committee of the State Bar’s Labor and Employment Section from 2003-07.

Currently, he is a vice president of CJA, co-chair of its Task Force on the Elimination of Bias and Inequality in the Justice System, and liaison to the California Lawyers’ Association.

Also elected as CJA officers were Fresno Superior Court Judge Heather Mardel Jones and Yolo Superior Court Judge David Rosenberg, as vice presidents, and San Diego Superior Court Judge Patricia Garcia, as secretary/treasurer.
