Services are pending for retired Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner John E. Chemeleski, who died after a long bout with cancer.

He was 71.

An alumnus of Southwestern University Law School, Chemeleski was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1975. He became a State Bar-certified family law specialist in 1981.

For 18 years, he was a sole practitioner in downtown Los Angeles before the judges of the Superior Court elected him to serve as a commissioner in 1994.

The Family Law Section of the State Bar honored him as Family Law Judicial Officer of the Year in 2007.

Chemeleski, who died Wednesday, was known as unflappable, even-handed, and highly knowledgeable of family law, a subject he taught to new judges.
