Nate Holden’s 90th Birthday Celebrated

More than 200 persons on Saturday joined in celebrating the 90th anniversary of the birth in Macon, Georgia, of Nate Holden, born to a family of meager means, who joined the Army during World War II—though underage, at 16—earned a high school diploma in night school, and served as a  member of the state Senate, from 1974–1978, and the Los Angeles City Council, from 1987–2002. Holden’s actual birthday is tomorrow.

Holden, center, is flanked by well wishers Daviann Mitchell Braun, a member of the Los Angeles Superior Court, and former Los Angeles County Bar Association President Roland Coleman. They are seen at a cocktail reception kicking off a six-hour birthday party.

Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1973-79 and a Los Angeles County supervisor from 1992–2008, is among those delivering congratulatory remarks to Holden following the dinner.

On display, moments after it is unveiled, is a painting depicting Holden with toy weapons which resemble actual ones. The rendition is from a photograph of Holden, as a state senator, in connection with his successful bill barring such implements. Standing behind him is son Chris Holden, a member of the state Assembly, who arranged the party.
