By a MetNews Staff Writer
Stephen M. Liacouras has been named chief circuit mediator for the Ninth U.S. Circuit, Chief Judge Sidney R. Thomas announced Friday.
Liacouras will take his new post on August 1, after having worked as a circuit mediator since 2001. He will replace current chief circuit mediator Claudia L. Bernard, slated to retire after 11 years overseeing the Circuit Mediation Office.
As chief mediator, Liacouras will manage that office’s seven mediators, who together resolve around 1,200 cases a year.
Before becoming a circuit mediator, Liacouras was in-house counsel for a Texas technology company. From 1995-99 he worked for the Ninth U.S. Circuit, first as a motions attorney then as a supervising civil research attorney.
Liacouras obtained his law degree from Yale in 1990.
