29th Annual ‘Persons of the Year’ Dinner Held

 

Former and present Los Angeles County officials attending the “Person of the Year” dinner gathered on the dais, during the program, for a group photo. They are former County Counsel Lloyd Pellman, now a partner in Nossaman LLP; retired Los Angeles Sheriff Leroy D. Baca; County Counsel Mary Wickham; County Supervisor Kathryn Barger; former District Attorney John Van de Kamp (also a former state attorney general), now of counsel to Mayer Brown; former District Attorney Steve Cooley, now of Steve Cooley & Associates, a professional consulting firm; District Attorney Jackie Lacey; Sheriff Jim McDonnell; and former District Attorney Robert H. Philibosian, of counsel to Sheppard Mullin.

Attorney/civic leader Alan Skobin, Beverly Hills Bar Association and Bar Foundation Chief Executive Officer Marc R. Staenberg, and state Treasurer John Chiang were feted Friday Night at the Metropolitan News-Enterprise’s 29th annual “Person of the Year” dinner, drawing nearly 200 well-wishers, including judges and other public officials.

In attendance were 16 former “persons of the year.” They were:

Attorney/mediator Lee Kanon Alpert, retired Sheriff Leroy D. Baca, former District Attorney Steve Cooley, attorney/bar leader Jack Denove, “Teddy Bear” attorney L. Ernestine Fields, attorney/conductor Gary S. Greene, former State Bar President Patrick Kelly, District Attorney Jackie Lacey, U.S. District Court Judge Ronald S.W. Lew, retired Superior Court Judge Charles McCoy, Sheriff James McDonnell, former District Attorney Robert H. Philibosian, retired Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Burt Pines, retired U.S. District Court Judge George Schiavelli, Court of Appeal Presiding Justice Paul A. Turner, and former California Attorney General John Van de Kamp.

Philibosian emceed the event for the 21st time, and Father Michael Carcerano delivered the invocation for the 22nd time.

His invocation was preceded by words of tribute to a past person of the year who died last year, retired Court of Appeal Presiding Justice Vaino Spencer.

Presenting scrolls to the honorees were County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Superior Court Presiding Judge Daniel Buckley, District Attorney Jackie Lacey, and Sheriff Jim McDonnell. Los Angeles County Bar Association President-Elect Michael Meyer conveyed good wishes to the honorees on behalf of LACBA.
