HOLLY FUJIE

Superior Court Judge

California Women Lawyers will present the 2016 Joan Dempsey Klein Distinguished Jurist Award to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Holly Fujie, the organization said yesterday.

The award is given for “excellence as a jurist and for long-standing, vigorous service and inspiration to women lawyers in California.” The honor is named for the retired presiding justice of Div. Three of this district’s Court of Appeal, who was CWL’s founding president.

Fujie was named to the bench by Gov. Jerry Brown in December 2011. She was an equity shareholder in Buchalter Nemer from 1991 until she took office as a judge of the court.

She was an associate, then equity shareholder, for Rosen Wachtell & Gilbert from 1985 to 1991. Fujie was an associate for Rogers & Wells from 1981 to 1985, Morgan Lewis & Bockius from 1980 to 1981 and Adams Duque & Hazeltine from 1978 to 1980.

The attorney earned both her undergraduate and law degrees from UC Berkeley before joining the State Bar in 1978.

She was elected to the State Bar Board of Governors—now the Board of Trustees—in 2005 by Los Angeles County lawyers and served as the organization’s president during the 2008-2009 term.

She has also served on the boards of the California Bar Foundation, the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles chapter of the Federal Bar Association, the Boalt Hall Alumni Association, Bet Tzedek, and the Chancery Club.

She was also a member of the advisory board of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Los Angeles, LACBA’s Committee for Diversity in the Profession and the joint LACBA/WLALA Task Force on the Retention and Advancement of Women. She chaired Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s panel for vetting potential federal district court nominees prior to her own appointment to the bench.

She received the Making a Difference Through Service to the Profession Award by the American Bar Association’s General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division in 2009.

The Joan Dempsey Klein award will be presented at CWL’s annual judicial reception June 10 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Registration is required by June 3, the organization said, and is available on its website, www.cwl.org.
