Judge Nishimoto Brings Grenade to Courthouse

From Staff and Wire Service Reports

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge brought what appeared to be a live grenade to the Torrance Courthouse, police and court spokespersons confirmed yesterday.

Neither would name the judge, but sources confirmed that it was Judge Cary Nishimoto.

The incident occurred Tuesday, prompting some tense moments before the device was taken safely away.

Police said the judge found the grenade in the possessions of a relative who’d recently died and brought it in his car to the courthouse late in the afternoon. They explained he apparently wanted to dispose of the device and asked a deputy sheriff for help.

The Superior Court spokesperson said the incident occurred after 4 p.m. and only court employees were in the building.

The Sheriff’s Department Arson and Explosives Unit took charge of the situation, dealing with the device in the back of the courthouse while employees went out the front, the spokesperson said.

The incident was concluded at 5:31 p.m., she added, when police determined the device was inert.
