Chemerinsky to Address Bar Sections on U.S. High Court Decisions

 

CHEMERINSKY

Erwin Chemerinsky, founding dean of the University of California at Irvine School of Law, will, on two successive nights, provide a review of U.S. Supreme Court decisions during the present term.

On June 4, he will be joined in analyzing cases by fellow liberal Howard Miller, a former State Bar president. The sponsoring group will be the Senior Lawyers Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

Lola M. McAlpin-Grant, chair of the section, said in an e-mail to members:

“This is our last program for the 2012-2013 year. I hope you will join me for what will be unforgettable.”

The discussion will take place at the LACBA offices on the 27th Floor of the building at Seventh and Bixel Streets in downtown Los Angeles. Registration and dinner are set for 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by the program. Attendees will receive 3.25 hours of MCLE credit.

Prices for the event range from $30 (for law students) to $115 for those not fitting in any of the other six categories. There is separate pricing for those viewing a webcast, ranging from $70 to $120.

The following night, Chemerinsky will address LACBA’s Litigation Section. The talk will be presented as part of its Trial Practice Inn of Court program.

Venue for that event will be Los Angeles Athletic Club at 431 West 7th Street in downtown Los Angeles. Registration will open at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the program at 7:30 p.m.

One unit of MCLE credit will be provided.

The cost to attend is $75.

The Pasadena Bar Association’s Real Estate Section will present a talk today at noon on “2012 Appellate Decisions Affecting Real Estate.”

Speaking will be attorney Lawrence H. Jacobson, a past president of the Beverly Hills Bar Association.

The meeting will be held at the Noor Restaurant, 260 E. Colorado Blvd., in Pasadena.

Members will be charged $35 to attend, and non-members will be assessed $45.

There will be one unit of MCLE credit.

The San Fernando Valley Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Law Section will present a noon program Thursday on “Fraud Exception in Bankruptcy.”

The speakers will be former association president Mark S. Blackman, of the Encino law firm of Alpert, Barr & Grant, and A. Hillary Grosberg, an Encino sole practitioner.

They will discuss how to block a fraud judgment, obtain in state court, from being wiped out in a bankruptcy proceeding.

One hour of MCLE credit will be given.

The Libertarian Law Council and the Los Angeles Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society will present a noon lunch program on June 5 on “Drones and Due Process.”

Speakers will be John C. Yoo, professor at the UC Berkeley School of Law; Gregory S. McNeal, associate professor at Pepperdine University School of Law ; and Ahilan Arulanantham, deputy legal director of the ACLU of Southern California.

They will discuss, according to a meeting announcement, “the due-process, privacy, and national-security implications of drone use for targeted killings overseas and aerial surveillance at home.”

The event will take place at McCormick & Schmick’s, at Fourth and Hope Streets, in downtown Los Angeles.

One hour of MCLE credit will be given.
