The Inner City Law Center has awarded Manatt, Phelps & Phillips and partner Margaret “Maggie” Levy the organization’s Humanitarian Award.

The award was presented Tuesday at the center’s 13th annual awards luncheon, it said in a release. Also honored was former Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis, a possible candidate for county supervisor next year.

The organization said Manatt “has been one of Inner City Law Center’s most consistent and generous supporters,” with attorneys and staff devoting more than 1,300 hours to ICLC’s clients in 2012. ICLC said the firm “helped guide the organization’s policy work, represented low-income tenants facing habitability issues or unlawful evictions, assisted veterans who were improperly denied VA benefits, and fought against discrimination targeting people living with HIV/AIDS.”

ICLC said it was honoring Levy individually, “in recognition of the extraordinary depth of her commitment to providing free legal services to the poor and her two decades of service on Inner City Law Center’s Board, including as Board Secretary.”

Levy is co-chair of the firm’s Insurance Industry group, representing life and health insurance companies and health plans in bad faith and ERISA litigation, according to her biography on the firm’s website.
