Acting Chief Deputy County Counsel John Krattli has been named acting county counsel for Los Angeles County, effective Wednesday of next week.

The Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved Chief Executive Officer William Fujioka’s recommendation that Krattli head up the county’s legal department following the scheduled departure of Andrea Ordin. Ordin, the only woman ever to have held the office, was appointed in 2009 and informed the board in November that she would be stepping down.

Krattli, 59, is a graduate of UC Santa Barbara and UCLA School of Law. He will be paid $232,214 per year, about $13,000 less than Ordin but a 15 percent rise above his base salary and a nine percent increase from his current compensation as acting chief deputy, Fujioka said in a memo to the board.

Krattli, who was admitted to the State Bar in 1978, has risen through the ranks of the office. His assignments have included advising the Local Agency Formation Commission and serving on the county Claims Board.

The county is conducting an extensive search for a permanent replacement for Ordin, Fujioka said.
