Rylaarsdam Named Acting Presiding Justice

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye yesterday named Court of Appeal Justice William F. Rylaarsdam to serve as acting presiding justice for the Fourth District’s Div. Three.

He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Presiding Justice David G. Sills earlier this month until the governor appoints a replacement, who must then be confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Appointments.

Art. VI, Sec. 3 of the California Constitution specifically provides that the Chief Justice may appoint an acting presiding justice of a Court of Appeal in the event there is no permanent presiding justice available to serve.

A jurist for 26 years, Rylaarsdam has served on Div. Three since 1995 and is the senior justice serving on that court.
