Venable LLP yesterday announced the additions of Dan Silverman and Brett Garner to its Los Angeles office.

Silverman joined the firm from the Roll Law Group as a partner on Monday, while Garner came from Michelman & Robinson LLP to become of counsel to Venable on June 1.

Douglas Emhoff, managing partner of Venable’s Los Angeles office, remarked that the addition of these two attorneys will “expand key practice areas on the West Coast and provide more resources in our robust and well-established litigation, IP and advertising practices.”

He added that Venable “has maintained a strong commitment to growing our firm in California” since opening the Los Angeles office five years ago.

Silverman said he was “thrilled to join a highly regarded national firm with a broad platform of resources, practices and clients that complement my practice” and to be reunited with Emhoff, a former colleague at Pillsbury Madison & Sutro.

He added that Venable’s “strong culture of collegiality and its support for pro bono efforts” also attracted him to the firm.

Garner said he decided to join Venable because his “clients consistently have needs throughout the U.S., not just in California,” that he felt this firm could meet. He also said he was “impressed with the growth of this firm in Los Angeles and nationally,” especially in its online advertising and marketing practices.

Silverman’s practice focuses on commercial litigation, including consumer class actions, false advertising claims, and product liability disputes, a spokesperson for the firm said. He also has experience litigating intellectual property disputes, including trade secret and patent, and trademark infringement disputes.

Before joining Roll, Silverman was a partner at Foley & Lardner and at Heller Ehrman, where he worked for 10 years. He graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1985 before earning his law degree from Harvard University and joining the California State Bar in 1988

Garner’s main practice involves intellectual property litigation and disputes involving online companies, publishers and advertising networks, the firm spokesperson said. The attorney also handles transactional matters, including media and co-branding agreements, and publishing and advertising agreements.

He holds an undergraduate degree from Chapman University, a business degree from UCLA, and a law degree from Pepperdine University.

Garner joined the State Bar in 2001, and is also licensed to practice in New York and Washington, D.C.
