Valley Legal Foundation to Sponsor Law Day Charity Event

By a MetNews Staff Writer

The Valley Community Legal Foundation is sponsoring its annual Law Day Gala on June 5 at the CBS Studios back lot in Studio City.

The reception and silent auction are scheduled to begin at 6:00, with dinner and the program beginning at 7:30.

The foundation is the San Fernando Valley Bar Association’s non-profit charitable arm and distributes contributions raised through the event to help fund law- and justice-related charities in the area, scholarships, and grants to legal-related organizations.

This year’s event will honor Los Angeles Superior Court Presiding Judge Charles W. “Tim” McCoy, District Attorney Steve Cooley and former Superior Court Public Information Officer Jerrianne Hayslett, author of “Anatomy of a Trial: Public Loss, Lessons Learned from The People vs. O.J. Simpson.”

McCoy is slated to receive from current VCLF President Stephen T. Holzer the Pearl F. Vogel Award—formerly known as the President’s Award—named in honor of the first president of the foundation, who passed away last year.

Justice Judith M. Ashmann-Gerst of this district’s Court of Appeal, Div. Two, is scheduled to present the Hero in Law Enforcement award to Cooley in recognition of his outstanding contributions to public safety. Ashmann-Gerst worked with Cooley when he was head deputy district attorney in San Fernando and she was supervising Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court’s North Valley District.

Hayslett is receiving the Armand Arabian Law and Media Award. The award is named after the first judge from the San Fernando Valley area to join the state Supreme Court and recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to law and media.

Oscar-winning actress Shirley Jones and her husband, comedian Marty Ingels, are scheduled to emcee the event, which is black-tie optional.

The foundation asked that those interested in attending to call (818) 227-0490.

Tickets are $125 per person.
