California Supreme Court Justice Joyce L. Kennard will undergo unexpected abdominal surgery to remove a growth that is believed to be benign, the court announced yesterday.

The court said its senior associate justice, a member for more than 20 years, will not be working for several weeks and will not attend oral arguments in May or June. The court said it will seek stipulations from counsel to permit Kennard to participate in decisions after viewing videotapes of oral arguments.

“On behalf of all the justices, I wish Justice Kennard a speedy recovery and look forward to her return to the court,” Chief Justice Ronald M. George said in a statement.

Prior to being named to the high court in 1989 by then-Gov. George Deukmejian, Kennard served on the Los Angeles Municipal Court, the Los Angeles Superior Court and Div. Three of this district’s Court of Appeal.

She holds undergraduate and law degrees, as well as a master’s in public administration, from USC.
