Another Candidate for Court Receives ‘Qualified’ Rating

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Los Angeles attorney Marvin G. Fischler yesterday reported receiving a “qualified” rating from the Los Angeles County Bar Associa- tion’s Judicial Election Evaluations Committee.

The civil practitioner is challenging Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Laura A. Matz in the June 8 primary. Matz has not returned multiple calls regarding her rating, and her campaign consultant, David Gould, would not discuss the matter on the record.

Fischler said he appealed the committee’s tentative decision, but it maintained its original evaluation of him.

“I think I deserved a ‘well qualified,’ but…they did say I was qualified to do the job, and I thank them for that,” he remarked.

In addition to Matz, two other incumbent judges are facing challengers this election cycle. Judges Maren E. Nelson and Soussan G. Bruguera are the respective targets of Los Angeles attorneys Jim G. Baklayan and Douglas W. Weitzman.

Nelson’s campaign reported earlier that she had been rated “exceptionally well qualified,” while Bruguera said she was rated “well qualified.” Baklayan and Weitzman have not returned MetNews phone calls about their ratings.
