Harris Stretches Lead in Race For Attorney General

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris (D) slightly increased her lead over Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley (R) yesterday, as more vote-by-mail and provisional ballots were counted in the close contest for California attorney general.

As of 3:39 p.m., Secretary of State Debra Bowen reported, Harris had 4,203,346 votes, or 46 percent, to Cooley’s 4,172,616, or 45.6 percent, giving Harris a lead of 30,730 votes. Fewer than 680,000 ballots remain to be processed statewide, the secretary of state reported.

Election officials in each of the 58 counties must complete their tallies by Nov. 30 and report the results to Bowen’s office by Dec. 3.
