Attorney Richard Widom Faces Domestic Violence Charges

By a MetNews Staff Writer

The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office has brought domestic violence charges against a workers’ compensation attorney accused of beating his wife, a lawyer at his former firm.

A spokesperson confirmed yesterday that Richard A. Widom, until recently a name partner at the workers’ compensation firm now known as Stockwell Harris Woolverton Muehl, was charged with misdemeanor spousal battery last month over an incident alleged to have occurred on March 1.

The City Attorney’s Office did not name the victim, but a source told the MetNews that Widom, 57, severely beat his wife, Lisa Kerner, one of the firm’s current vice presidents. Kerner remained with the firm, but Widom was terminated and entered solo practice, the source said.

The City Attorney’s Office’s Family Violence Unit brought the misdemeanor charge after deputy district attorneys rejected the case for felony prosecution.

Widom is scheduled to face a pretrial hearing Jan. 6 in Department 141. His attorneys at Katten Muchin Rosenman could not be reached for comment.

Representatives of Stockwell Harris also could not be reached for comment.

The case is People v. Widom, 9WA03736.
