A memorial service for U.S. District Court Judge Robert M. Takasugi of the Central District of California is scheduled for Thursday.

The 4 p.m. service will be held at USC’s Town and Gown, located at 665 Exposition Boulevard.

Takasugi was the first Japanese American to serve on the federal bench and passed away last Tuesday at the age of 78.

He served on the federal and state benches for 36 years, having been named to the District Court by then-President Gerald Ford in 1976. He took senior status in 1996.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made to the Robert M. Takasugi Pro Bono Bar Review through the Japanese American Bar Association at P.O. Box 86063, Los Angeles, CA 90086.
