Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner announced Friday that Sacramento attorney Peter Conlin has been appointed deputy commissioner for policy and regulations and counsel to the commissioner.

Conlin, of Sacramento firm Norwood Mattoch was named to replace outgoing Deputy Commissioner and Counsel to the Commissioner Bill Gausewitz, who is leaving the California Department of Insurance to work as an attorney at Michelman & Robinson.

Admitted to the State Bar in 1994, Conlin has served as the Republican consultant for the Insurance Committee in both the California State Assembly and the California State Senate. He served as legal counsel to Assembly Speaker Curt Pringle and as counsel to the senate minority leader from 2001 to 2003, and as assistant state treasurer from 1998 to 1999.

Conlin has also represented insurance agents, brokers and the American Insurance Association in his practice as an attorney. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the UC Davis School of Law, and holds a master of arts degree from Northwestern University.

In a statement, Poizner thanked Gausewitz for his service and commented that he was “delighted” to welcome Conlin, who the commissioner said brought “a wealth of knowledge from his experience in state service and the insurance industry.”
