Former Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP partner Shahzad A. Malik has jumped to TroyGould’s tax department.

Malik’s practice focuses on transactional tax matters, including planning and negotiation of mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, complex financings and initial public offerings, as well as international taxation, real estate, REIT transactions and advising both hedge and private equity funds in formation and operation, according to the firm.

The former chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Corporate Tax Committee made the move to TroyGould last Tuesday, the firm said.

Sanford Hillsberg, managing partner of TroyGould, called Malik “a top tax advisor in Los Angeles,” praising his “extensive knowledge of tax, finance and international law” as “invaluable asset to our clients.”

Malik is also a barrister and solicitor of the Law Society of Upper Canada in Ontario and a former associate of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Ottawa in 1991.

In 1994, he graduated magna cum laude from the University of Ottawa’s law school.

The attorney earned an L.L.M. in taxation from the New York University School of Law in 1997 and was admitted to practice in California that same year.
