The  Torrance-based personal injury litigation firm of  AgnewBrusavich has awarded 27 scholarships to seniors from 16 local high schools, bringing to 355 the number it has given out in the last 15 years, the firm said yesterday in a release.

The firm said the total value of the scholarships now exceeds $106,000. This year’s scholarships were awarded at a May 18 banquet at a Torrance hotel, reflecting a continuing commitment by Gerald Agnew and Bruce Brusavich, who established their firm in 1984.

The scholarships are awarded to students intending to enroll in community college and later transfer to a four-year university. They provide the funds necessary for students to meet their first semester obligations for tuition, books and fees.

Agnew, Brusavich and their law firm’s administrator, Daniel Favero, select the recipients based on a personal application from each student—which includes an essay about the student’s goals, ambitions and life experiences—and the students’ demonstrated academic achievements in light of personal, economic or family adversity, the firm explained.

At this year’s banquet, the recipients and their parents, friends, teachers and counselors heard remarks by retired Court of Appeal Justice  J. Gary Hastings and Joe Holliday, the Honors Transfer Program director at El Camino College.
