Venable LLP Acquires New Litigation Partner

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Venable LLP has added a litigation partner to its Los Angeles office, the firm announced yesterday.

White collar and criminal defense attorney Philip Kent Cohen, formerly a name partner in the Santa Monica litigation boutique of Murphy, Rosen & Cohen, stepped down as partner there to become of counsel before making a lateral move to Venable.

Douglas Emhoff, the partner-in-charge of Venable’s Los Angeles office and chair of the firm’s Commercial West Litigation Group, praised Cohen as a “tough, fearless litigator with outstanding trial chops” who had “a huge number of stacked-deck criminal and civil cases, with amazing results and staying power through appeal.”

Emhoff was a law school classmate of Cohen and said Cohen was “drawn to the courtroom from the start.”

Cohen said he was drawn to Venable by its “entrepreneurial mindset about practice development,” and “commitment to establishing a strong presence in Los Angeles.”

The New York native graduated with honors from Fordham University in 1988 and earned his law degree from the University of Southern California Law School in 199l, where he was part of the Hale Moot Court Honors Program.

Venable LLP’s practice includes corporate and business law, complex litigation, intellectual property and government affairs. The firm is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and also has offices in Maryland, New York and Virginia.
