The California Supreme Court has appointed a new director of the court’s Civil Central Staff, officials said yesterday in a release.

Emily Graham, a 19-year member of the staff who has served as acting director, will oversee a group of 14 attorneys.

Justice Marvin R. Baxter, chairperson of the court’s Civil Central Staff committee, said the Civil Central Staff plays a “crucial role” in assisting the court in selecting the approximately 110 cases that the court accepts each year for a written decision. The Civil Central Staff prepares memoranda on approximately 1,700 petitions for review and related filings in civil matters each year, the release stated.

Chief Justice Ronald M. George praised Graham’s experience within the Civil Central Staff and in private practice. He added that Graham has the “full confidence and backing of the court” in her new role.

Graham could not be reached for comment.
