Loyola Law School Names Victor J. Gold New Dean

Loyola Law School Friday named Victor J. Gold as the school’s 16th dean.
Gold, currently acting dean and senior vice president, is a professor and William M. Rains Fellow who joined the school in 1984. His selection was “the culmination of a months-long, nationwide search” after its former dean, David W. Burcham, left in January to become executive vice president and provost of Loyola Marymount University, the school said in a statement.
Loyola Marymount University President Robert B. Lawton, S.J., expressed “delight” at Gold’s selection, calling him “instrumental in [an] era of educational excellence and growth at the school.” He added that Gold’s selection would cause the school’s “long-held commitment to legal ethics and community service as well as academic expansion [to] not only continue, but grow.”
A former tenured law professor at Arizona State University and associate at the Los Angeles firm of Nossaman, Krueger & Marsh, Gold served as Loyola Law School’s associate dean of academic affairs from 2000-2005, where he oversaw an increased focus on the school’s national stature with a drive to recruit professors and emphasize faculty research, the school said.
Gold said the school’s “genius…is that it has established a national reputation for excellence in scholarship while remaining true to its traditions of superb teaching, public service and the pursuit of social justice,” continuing that he felt “fortunate that Loyola is already one of the finest law schools in the nation,” and vowing to “work to make our future even brighter.”
Gold attended both college and law school at UCLA before his admission to the State Bar in 1975, and the law school said he has earned accolades as an educator and administrator, including an Excellence in Teaching Award from Loyola’s graduating class of 2007.
The author of six books on the Federal Rules of Evidence, Gold has also written articles on evidence and advocacy law. He is a member of the American Law Institute and the author of bar exam questions on contracts, remedies and evidence in California and Arizona.
He has also served as a legal analyst for CBS News and provided legal commentary to The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, ABC News, NBC News, CNN and other outlets.
