Bet Tzedek Names Volunteeer Attorney of the Year

By a MetNews Staff Writer

The public interest law firm Bet Tzedek has named Beverly Hills attorney Scott L. Landsbaum the Elyse S. Kline Memorial Attorney of the Year.

Landsbaum, a Beverly Hills native and USC law graduate, told the MetNews yesterday he has volunteered at Bet Tzedek for the last five years. Coming in every Tuesday morning, he said, he assists with the intake of clients, which includes conducting client interviews and consulting with staff attorneys.

The clients are usually seeking help with landlord-tenant issues, consumer debt and rent control questions, and government benefits, among other things, Landsbaum said.  In private practice, he explained, he runs his own firm dealing primarily with intellectual property and transactional work.

Bet Tzedek provides free legal services to low-income, disabled, and elderly clients. The staff and volunteers assist more than 10,000 clients annually.

The award was recently presented to Landsbaum by Sandor E. Samuels, chair of Bet Tzedek Legal Services and chief legal officer of Countrywide Financial Corp., and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Terry Friedman, a former executive director of Bet Tzedek.
