Former Judge Joyce Karlin Fahey Taken Off Bar Suspension

By a MetNews Staff Writer

Joyce Karlin Fahey, a judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court from 1991-97, yesterday was reinstated as an inactive member of the State Bar of California, following an administrative suspension on Aug. 16 based on non-payment of dues.

The reinstatement was backdated to last Friday, when the payment was received.

Fahey, now a mediator with ARC, in 1991 attracted international attention and charges of racism based on her sentencing of a shopkeeper, Soon Ja Du, to probation after the woman was convicted of fatally shooting an African-American teenager she suspected of shoplifting. Then using her maiden name of Kalin, she beat off an challenge by three attorneys in the next year’s primary election.
