Commercial and employment law specialist John L. Viola has joined Dykema’s Los Angeles office as a member in its litigation practice.

With extensive experience in both state and federal courts, the former Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner member has handled a variety of commercial, employment, and complex litigation matters including securities, ERISA, real estate, life insurance, professional liability insurance coverage, and insurance bad faith disputes. Additionally, he has represented clients throughout the country in class action and appellate matters.

The 52-year-old lawyer will continue to handle a similar range of matters in his new role.

Born and raised in New York, Viola earned his law degree from New York University in 1979, and his undergraduate degree from Columbia University in 1976. He was admitted to practice in New York in 1980.

He later moved to the West Coast and was admitted to the California State Bar in 1987.

In a statement, Dykema Chair Rex Schlaybaugh described Viola as exemplary of “the best talent in the industry.”

“His considerable class action, trial and appellate experience will be valuable in assisting our clients’ needs, both regionally and nationally,” Schlaybaugh said.

Craig N. Hentschel, managing member of Dykema’s local office, noted the over 25 years of experience and leadership Viola brings to the firm.

Calling Viola “an outstanding attorney,” Hentschel said the Midwest-based firm was proud to have Viola join its California team.
