Retired Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Howard D. McClain has died at 88.

McClain passed away on Friday, sources said.

The Montana native was city judge in Huntington Park, while simultaneously practicing law in that city, from 1950 to 1952, and a San Antonio Municipal Court judge from 1952 to 1961, when then-Gov. Pat Brown elevated him to the Superior Court.

He sat in Pomona and was supervising judge of the East District for a time. He resumed active status as an attorney in 1979 and became inactive 10 years later.

McClain was a graduate of Huntington Park High School and attended Los Angeles City College before earning his law degree from Pacific Coast College of Law in 1940. He served in the Navy in World War II, then practiced law in Huntington Park from 1946 to 1952.

He also taught law at Pacific Coast and later at LaVerne College School of Law.
