Confirmation Hearings Set for April 4 for C.A. Nominees

Confirmation hearings have been scheduled for April 4 for three Los Angeles Superior Court judges nominated by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for elevation to this districtís Court of Appeal.

The three-member Commission on Judicial Appointments will hear testimony on the nominations in the Supreme Court courtroom at the Ronald Reagan State Building, 300 S. Spring St.

The hearing for Judge Thomas L. Willhite will begin at 2 p.m. Hearings for Judges Sandy R. Kriegler and Frances Rothschild will follow.

Willhite was nominated to Div. Four, where he would fill the vacancy created by the elevation of Justice Norman L. Epstein to presiding justice.

Kriegler was nominated to Div. Five, to fill the seat left vacant by the retirement last year of Justice Margaret M. Grignon. Rothschild would serve in Div. One, succeeding Justice Reuben A. Ortega, who retired last year as well.

For Second District appointments, the Commission on Judicial Appointments  consists of Chief Justice Ronald George, Attorney General Bill Lockyer and the districtís senior presiding justice, Joan Dempsey Klein of Div. Three.

The commission is soliciting testimony on the nominations. The deadline for written comments and requests to testify in person is 5 p.m. on Monday, March 28. Requests to speak must include a summary of the facts on which any testimony or opinion will be based, under the commissionís guidelines.

The commission requests that correspondence be addressed to the chief justice at the Supreme Court, 350 McAllister St., San Francisco, CA 94102, Attention: Ms. Gale Tunnell, Secretary to the Commission on Judicial Appointments.
